  • Slums
  • Disease (tuberculosis, cholera)
  • Overcrowding
  • No heat/running water in slums
  • Defective water
  • Factories – legislation – had to improve labour situation
  • Dangers in factories – child labour
  • Oppressive labour unions
  • Smog ( bad air quality because factories were burning coal and thus creating severe air pollution)

 

Positives

  • First factory act 1802 – limits child labour to 12 hours/day in cotton mills
  • Workers protested the bad practices of certain bosses
  • Ten hours act for adults, especially women
  • Police force in Great Britain – Robert Peel, as Prime Minster reduced crime rate with new police force, affectionately known as “Bobbies”
  • Poor laws – relief provided for poor and/or separated men and women
  • Great Reform Bill – voting system, electoral reform allowed workers to have some say
  • Import tax on grain in England put more food into to the general circulation
