KV's First Campus Market
A report by Corey Griffith
Grade 12 Student in Entrepreneurship 110
Over all, I believe the first ever Kennebecasis Valley High School Campus Market was a complete success. As with any new project or venture, there are hurdles to overcome but we faced them as a group or a class and were able to jump over them without any major glitches. I hope this report gives you some insights into this unique project given to us by Enterprise Saint John and Sussex High School.
Learnings
Being a part of the Campus Market through my Entrepreneurship 110 class was an irreplaceable part of my learning experience. I believe it prepared me for the business world more than any amount of class time could do. It helped me to be more
independent and conscious of deadlines which also helped me in other classes. Before this Market project, I had no clue how to prepare a business plan but after making one for an actual business that I would be operating, I gained an incredible understanding of why all the different information is included. The committee work gave me a feeling of responsibility and trust especially by being a group leader. The committees overall were an excellent idea but I do have some suggestions.
Committee Suggestions
Suggestions I would have would be improved communication between groups, preparing the electrical, and traffic flow considerations during the market. I found it difficult to understand what other groups were doing and could have used more lead time to supply requests. In retrospect perhaps more in-depth committee reporting might help get this information across. Of course, most learning takes place after the fact.
Biggest Stress
I must say that being on the layout committee, the electrical situation was the most stressful for myself. More and earlier information from participating schools and built in testing time with electrical for the market would help. Also, the idea of having all the food and electrical at the back of the market area is an excellent suggestion that of course, was thought of afterward. Not only would the other booths get more attention but that is the best place to supply eleltricity from. Having the approval from our
principal to use the vending and pop machine outlets was wonderful and without it we couldn't have supplied enough power. Electrical is definitely the part of the market I would want focused on early in the project.
Building in more space
Having more room for customers should also be a priority for the next event. I must agree that the space in the middle was nice as a refuge from crowds but is space that could be utilized to diminish overcrowding during peak "business hours". This may not work but it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I think by expanding down towards the mini gym and out into the lobby is also a good idea. It could give each vendor more room and spread the people out more than dispersing the crowds into a larger area.
Coolest attention getters
The flashing light that Zack's Duct Tape Wallets had was an excellent idea and having more like it would add to the atmosphere. It catches peoples eye and seemed to fill up the space with a feeling of excitement difficult to explain.
I really liked the balloon arch and especially enjoyed the time spent at the school the night before the market when a small, focused group of helpers set up with only hours left until opening.
Personal Changes
The only thing that I would change is the way in which I created my business. I would come up with a product that doesn't take as long to make or has a larger profit margin. I would also finish farther ahead of time to allow room for any problems. I did however enjoy working alone because I didn't have to make any compromises with a partner. Therefore, I could make the business exactly what I imagined it to be.
Final Comment
All in all, I believe participating in a campus Market is irreplaceable by anything else. The atmosphere at the market was wonderful and many of the products were excellent. I would most definitely participate in it again given the opportunity. I hope the future of Entrepreneurship mo continues to support the delivery of a smoothly run Campus Market at least once a year to the students of Kennebecasis Valley High School and surrounding population.
