KVHS Finalists at Reach Dal, October 2005
The KVHS Reach for the Top team was in Halifax Friday for the second annual Reach for Dalhousie event which
offers thirty thousand dollars in scholarships as prizes. In the morning qualification round, KVHS qualified in second
place out of the forty teams that were in attendance from all over the maritimes. Our team which included Jennifer
Stephen, Sean Thompson, Morgan Gagnon and alternate David Lenton, continued their success in the afternoon by
beating Dartmouth High in the quarter-finals and J.H. Gillis High of Antigonish in the semis. This sent our crusaders
to the final against defending champs Cobequid Educational Center from Truro, a team who were also National Reach
for the Top champions last year. The final was a hard fought battle in which the teams were tied going into the final three
questions. Cobequid came out ahead in the end winning 59-54. As finalists, our crusaders returned home with three
thousand dollars in scholarships each. Congratulations to the team on a great performance.

Kennebecasis Valley High School Defends Reach for the Top Provincial Title
Fredericton High School was the host of the 2006 Provincial Reach for the Top Championships on Saturday. Twenty-five teams from across
New Brunswick attended the event which was divided in two categories: senior and intermediate.
The senior division included the top ten teams in the province and was won by defending champions Kennebecasis Valley High School over
Bernice McNaughton High School by a score of 610-400. KVHS was undefeated this season winning all six provincial events compiling a 41 win and no
loss record. This win continues the Crusaders streak of eleven consecutive tournament titles dating back to April 2004. In semi-final action,
KV beat Fredericton High School while BMHS upset Saint John High.
The intermediate division, the equivalent of junior varsity in athletics, had fifteen teams participating. Kennebecasis Valley High dominated
this section as both teams it sent to Fredericton faced off in the final. KV #3 beat KV #2 on the third tie-breaker question by a score of
360-350. KV’s teams had reached the final by beating Saint John High and Fredericton High.
KV’s senior team, including players Sean Thompson, Morgan Gagnon, Jennifer Stephen and David Lenton, as well as coach Jason Thorne, has earned
the right to represent New Brunswick at the Reach for the Top National Championships which will be held in Edmonton, Alberta from May 28th to
May 30th. The Crusaders, 2002 National Champions and 2003 Finalists on CBC’s Smart Ask!, will attempt to better their fifth place finish from
their previous visit to Reach Nationals in 2004.

Reach National Championship 2006 Round Robin Report
The KVHS Reach for the Top team completed a very successful first day of competition on Sunday at the National Championships in
Edmonton. Our Crusaders, including Sean Thompson, Morgan Gagnon, Jen Stephen, David Lenton, Will Koncovy as well as coaches Mr. Pelletier
and Mr. Thorne, finished the round-robin with a five win and two loss record. For Jen, Dave and Will these were their first losses as members
of the senior team as our Crusaders had not lost a game since the National Championships in 2004.
KV started the day with a win versus Manitoba but then dropped their second game versus the British Columbia champions. Our crusaders
then won two straight over Alberta and Quebec before falling to Ontario powerhouse University of Toronto School. They then capped of their
day with a win versus the host team from Edmonton as well as a huge upset of 2004 National Champs and 2005 finalists St-George’s School for
Boys from Vancouver by a score of 500 to 250.
KV’s 5 and 2 record put them in 3rd place overall out of 12 teams which equals their performance in 2004. Our Crusaders will now begin the
playoffs with a rematch versus Manitoba at 2pm Atlantic Time today (Monday). A win will put them in the next round but a loss will end their
season. Good luck to the team!!!

Reach for the Top Nationals 2006 – Playoff update
Having fished the preliminary portion of the competition with a five win and two loss record, KV’s Reach for the Top team were rewarded with the third seed out of twelve teams heading
into round one of the playoffs. This third seed was an excellent result as it placed our New Brunswick representatives ahead of traditional private school powerhouses from the University of
Toronto Schools and St. Georges School for Boys from Vancouver.
In the first playoff round KV took on Massey Vanier Collegiate of Brandon Manitoba. Our Crusaders took an early lead and never looked back winning by a comfortable score of
360-220. Unfortunately, this was the most difficult set of questions in the round and the low overall score of the game dropped KV to the sixth and last seed in the second playoff round. As the
lowest seeded team, our Crusaders drew the top seed Woburn Collegiate from Toronto. The Ontario champions were undefeated all season beating over two hundred teams in their own province
before winning seven straight at Nationals.
To the surprise of most of the studio audience KV matched Woburn answer for answer taking the lead early in the game. At the end of the second round, the score was tied 260-260 and our
Crusaders were on the verge of creating the biggest upset of this year’s nationals. Unfortunately, Woburn just beat KV to two 40-points questions in the third round which lead the Ontario team to a
440-340 win.
Our Crusaders then had to play a waiting game as there was still a wild card spot in the semi-finals up for grabs for the highest scoring losing team. Unfortunately, the Alberta representatives
from Harry Ainlay High School scored 350 points in their second round game, compared to 340 for our Crusaders thus winning the wild card race by a margin of 10 points thus officially ending
KV’s season.
In the final standings, our Crusaders finished in 5th place in the country, a great performance made especially significant by the fact that they came within two questions of upsetting the eventual
National Champs from Woburn Ontario who did not lose a single game all year.
Congratulations to players Morgan Gagnon, Will Konvoy as well as graduating seniors Sean Thompson, Jen Stephen and David Lenton on an amazing season.
