Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 9 students: Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at Kennebecasis Valley High School. We are all looking forward to a very positive year both academically and socially. In addition to the information you and your child will find in the student handbook, please note the following: 1. We will be holding an Open House for parents and guardians of KVHS students on Septernber 13, 2007 from 7:00 - 8:15 p.m. At this time, parents will have the opportunity to meet teachers and ask general questions that may have come up in the early weeks of school. The Parent School Support Committee elections will be held in the theatre immediately before the Open House, beginning at 6:30. 2. As we believe that students benefit greatly from involvement in some aspect of the extra- curricular and/or co-curricular aspect of schooling, we are in the process of organizing an information "fair" for new students in the coming weeks. This "fair" should help to introduce new students to elements of school life at KVHS they might not have known about before. This activity will be held during the afternoon of September 13. 3. Extra Help - A number of opportunities are available for students experiencing difficulty with school work. Teachers will provide extra help and students should make the effort to find out when that assistance is available. As the year progresses, other opportunities such as peer tutoring and study skills programs will be available. Teachers will inform students of these opportunities; however, once again, students must be aware of the need to ask for help when required. 4. Specialists - All grade 9 students will take five specialist courses over the year. These include Art, Music, Technology, Health & Physical Education and Personal Develpment Career Planning. 5. Report Cards - Percentage marks are used at the high school level. Exams - will be written during the regular exam period: January 21-25 and June 9-13. 6. Student Fee - A student fee of $35.00 will be charged to cover school activities, locker and school agenda. 7. Communication - Grade 9 teachers strongly believe that communication with parents and guardians is an integral part of your child's education. We may be reached by telephone at 847-6200. You will receive a number of messages via talkmail over the course of the year from your child's teachers. Many of our classrooms are equipped with internet and thus many teachers find e-mail the most efficient means of contacting parents/guardians. If you have an e-mail address, please let us know. 8. Regular and prompt daily attendance is a priority at KVHS, as reflected in our Attendance Policy. Please take the time to read the complete policy in the student agenda.
