South-West Zone 2006
The KVHS Curling team was in action this week at the South-West Zone event with a spot in provincials on the line. The Mixed team, composed of Jon Rennie, Gillian Holmes, Chris Knox and Leah Thompson went undefeated beating Nackawic and Simonds thus qualifying for provincials next week in Bathurst.
The boys team, including Matt Shields, Sean Thompson, Jeff Kimball and Collin Furlong won their first match versus Leo Hayes but then dropped two close games versus Southern Victoria and Sir James Dunn Academy, eliminating them from contention.
The girls’ team, composed of Cattie McLeod, Sam Williams, Emily Daigle and Sam Robichaud lost their two games to strong teams from Fredericton High and John Caldwell in the strongest girl’s field seen in years.
Congratulations to the Boys and Girls teams for a great season and best of luck to the Mixed team at Provincials next week!
Provincial Final 8
The KVHS mixed curling team traveled to Bathurst this past weekend for
the provincial finals. Leading up to this year, KV had four silver medals in the past
five seasons and were looking for that elusive gold. Our Crusaders showed tremendous
determination as they rebounded from a loss in their first game by winning five straight
to capture KV’s first Provincial Mixed Curling banner in twenty years, last won in 1986. The
team, which included Jillian Holmes, Chris Knox, Leah Thompson, skip John Rennie and Coach
Mr. Thorne were beaten by Bathurst High in their first game on Thursday but returned the
favor by scores of 9-3 in the “B” semi final and 9-2 in the Championship. KV’s road to
the final also included wins versus Bernice McNaughton High and Nackawic High leading to
the key match of the event in the “B” final versus Mathieu-Martin. In this match, our
Crusaders trailed 4-3 after six ends when skip Jon Rennie made a difficult game-saving
shot for three points in the seventh end as KV won 7-4.
Congratulations to the team on a great performance.
