Welcome to KVHS

As you enter the doors of KVHS, you are also entering the next stage of your academic lives. KVHS is a big change from middle school, and this change comes with both opportunities and responsibilities. Some of the changes will include a challenge in the area of academics, sporting opportunities on one of our many teams, theatrical and musical performances and of course the chance to make new and lasting friendships.

This handbook was created just for you, the Graduation class of 2013. The thought behind the creation of this guide to KVHS was to help students gain information and to alleviate any fears one may have about KVHS. We are a community, a rather large school community, but believe it or not you will quickly adjust and soon be an active member of this community. The more involved you are the more you will enjoy this high school experience.

The KVHS school crest is a Crusader, and our motto is Fortune Favors the Daring. Although KVHS does have an official school cheer, there are a few others that you will hear over and over again. We suggest that you take a few minutes to learn these cheers. Now you are ready to support school spirit and school pride.

Important Terms

The following is a list of terms related to the "high school" experience that may be new to you.

Exams - During your high school career you will be required to write exams in most of your classes. Exams are like large tests which take 2 hours (or more) to write and cover all the material studied during a semester. Exams are written in January and in June. Next year's calendar will be posted with exam dates in June 2009.  Here is this year's (2008/2009) exam schedule as an example.

Exemptions - KVHS has an attendance incentive, which allows a student the option of NOT writing one exam if they meet the required standards.

Grad - The term used to describe a person who will be graduating from KVHS this school year. It is short for graduation.

Semester - Refers to the unit of time given to certain courses. The semesters are divided as September to January and February to June (half the school year).

Term - There are two terms in a semester. A report card is issued after each term (four report cards per year).

Credit - Credits are granted for courses in grades 11 and 12. You need a total of 17 credits to graduate from KVHS.

Graduation Requirements - You must pass certain courses in order to graduate.

Pre-requisite - In order to take certain courses you must pass another course first. For example, in order to take grade 11 English, you must have successfully completed grade 10 English.

Advanced Placement - A.P. courses are offered in a variety of subject areas each year. These courses are intended for highly motivated students. Students can write an external exam and then be eligible to receive university credit for that course.

Help Desk - During the first week of school a help desk service will be available for students seeking directions to classrooms, lockers etc. This service will operate during all breaks and at lunch. The help desk will be located in the main lobby,
